Chapter Ten

“Hey, what’s with the commotion?” Ross asked as he got out of his car at the convention center the next morning.

Jack grabbed his hat from the passenger seat of his car and then looked in the direction his brother was pointing. There were dozens of people milling around, staring at flyers that had been posted all over the outside of the building. He hoped that it didn’t have anything to do with him and Audrey. The last thing he wanted was another confrontation. “I don’t know, but I have a feeling we’re about to find out.”

Mike joined them and they approached a group of people. Jack recognized one of his former high school classmates. “What are you staring at, Bill?”

“Take a look for yourself.” Bill handed over a flyer with three words written in bold letters.

Remember Bobby Stone.

“‘Remember Bobby Stone.’ What’s that supposed to mean?” Jack asked.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Bill said. “These flyers are plastered all over the place. But apart from these three words, there’s no information.”

“Weird,” Jack said. He handed the flyer to his brothers, who looked at it and then handed it back.

“Good luck in there,” their friend said. “I’ll be cheering for you.”

“Thanks.”

“And of course, I’ll be cheering for your new girlfriend,” he said, giving Jack a nudge. “Audrey’s quite the looker.”

Jack didn’t bother saying that Audrey wasn’t his girl. He knew Bill wouldn’t believe it. No doubt he’d seen the picture of the two of them kissing. In fact, if there was someone who had missed it, Jack had yet to meet them. There had been another segment about the “Rodeo Sweethearts,” as everyone now referred to them, on one of those entertainment television shows last night. He and Audrey were now the unofficial king and queen of the rodeo. Someone had filmed the two of them while they’d been talking outside the men’s dressing room yesterday, adding fuel to the fire. He hadn’t seen anyone lurking about, so he didn’t know who to blame. But then, he hadn’t been looking for anyone either.

A gossip magazine had posted a picture from that encounter on its front page. The picture had made it appear that they were having an intensely emotional conversation, which they had been. But the caption had made it seem as if they’d shared a tender moment as opposed to the heated argument it had actually been. Well, there was one good thing. Audrey couldn’t accuse him of setting her up that time since she’d sought him out. Of course, logic hadn’t worked the first time, which was why she’d come to his dressing room in the first place.

He wondered if someone was following them. He wasn’t a particularly private person, but he wasn’t a fan of the paparazzi either. But since he didn’t know who—if anyone—was behind the surveilling, he was powerless to put a stop to it. There was no proof that this was a coordinated effort. More than one person could be photographing them and selling the pictures.
